Temwaiku
Temwaiku is a settlement located on the island of Tarawa in Kiribati. It is situated on the eastern part of South Tarawa, the capital atoll of Kiribati. Temwaiku is a densely populated area, reflecting the overall high population density of South Tarawa.
The settlement is characterized by a mix of residential, commercial, and governmental activities. As part of the capital region, Temwaiku houses various government offices and services. It also features small businesses, markets, and schools serving the local population.
Like other areas of South Tarawa, Temwaiku faces challenges related to overpopulation, limited land area, and vulnerability to climate change impacts, including sea-level rise and coastal erosion. Access to fresh water and sanitation are also significant concerns. The community relies on rainwater harvesting and groundwater resources, which are increasingly threatened by saltwater intrusion.
The economy of Temwaiku is largely based on government employment, small-scale commerce, and remittances from Kiribati citizens working abroad. Fishing and artisanal activities also contribute to the local economy.
Culturally, Temwaiku is predominantly Micronesian, with the Gilbertese language and customs playing a central role in community life. Traditional practices and values remain important, although they are increasingly influenced by modernization and globalization.
