Convergence for Social Democracy (Equatorial Guinea)
The Convergence for Social Democracy (Spanish: Convergencia para la Democracia Social, CPDS) is a political party in Equatorial Guinea. It is one of the few opposition parties legally permitted to operate in the country, though its activities are often restricted.
Founded in 1994, the CPDS identifies as a social democratic party, advocating for greater political freedoms, human rights, and economic equality in Equatorial Guinea. The party has participated in various national elections, consistently challenging the long-ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) led by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. However, due to allegations of widespread electoral fraud and government repression, the CPDS has not achieved significant electoral success.
The CPDS maintains an international presence through affiliations with various international social democratic organizations and participates in efforts to promote democracy and human rights in Equatorial Guinea. The party's leaders and members have often faced harassment, arrest, and other forms of intimidation from the government. The CPDS continues to function as a voice for dissent and a symbol of the struggle for democratic change in Equatorial Guinea, albeit under challenging circumstances.
