Plan B (musician)

Plan B, born Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew (and also known as Ben Drew), is an English rapper, singer, songwriter, actor and film director from Forest Gate, London. He is known for his diverse musical style, which blends hip hop, soul, and British indie music.

Drew initially gained recognition as a hip hop artist with his debut album, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words (2006), which showcased his lyrical dexterity and gritty storytelling. This album presented a socially conscious and often harsh view of urban life in the UK.

He later shifted his musical direction with his second album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks (2010), adopting a soul and Motown-inspired sound. This concept album, telling a story of love, loss, and incarceration, proved to be a commercial success and broadened his fanbase.

Subsequent albums have included iLL Manors (2012), which served as a soundtrack to his directorial debut film of the same name, and Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose (2018). iLL Manors continued his exploration of social issues through a blend of rap and spoken word, while Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose saw him return to a more traditional hip-hop sound while also experimenting with other genres.

Beyond his music career, Plan B has also pursued acting and filmmaking. He has appeared in films such as Adulthood, Harry Brown, and his own directorial debut, iLL Manors, which earned critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of gang violence and social inequality in London.

His work frequently tackles complex themes, including social injustice, poverty, and violence, making him a prominent voice in contemporary British music and culture. He is recognised for his versatility, willingness to experiment with different musical styles, and his engagement with social and political issues.
