Ray Powell (New Mexico politician)

Ray Powell (born January 22, 1949) is an American politician and businessman from New Mexico. He served as the New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands from 2003 to 2011.

Powell, a Democrat, was elected Land Commissioner in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. As Land Commissioner, he was responsible for managing over 9 million acres of state trust land to generate revenue for New Mexico's public schools, universities, and other beneficiaries. During his tenure, the State Land Office focused on diversifying revenue streams, increasing renewable energy development on state land, and addressing environmental concerns related to oil and gas production.

Prior to serving as Land Commissioner, Powell worked in the energy industry, including positions in oil and gas exploration and production. He has also been involved in ranching.

After leaving office in 2011, Powell remained active in public policy discussions, particularly those related to energy and natural resource management in New Mexico. He has occasionally been a commentator on related topics. He unsuccessfully ran for New Mexico State Treasurer in 2014.
