Meis (department store)

Meis was a regional department store chain based primarily in Illinois, USA. Founded in 1854 in Terre Haute, Indiana, by brothers Gustave and Isaac Meis, the company expanded throughout the Midwest. While initially focused on dry goods, Meis evolved into a full-line department store offering clothing, housewares, furniture, and other merchandise.

Throughout much of the 20th century, Meis was a significant retail presence in several Illinois communities. The company operated freestanding stores as well as locations in shopping malls. Meis was known for its moderate price points and a focus on customer service.

The Meis chain was acquired by Elder-Beerman in 1988. Subsequently, Elder-Beerman was acquired by The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. The Meis name disappeared as stores were converted to the Elder-Beerman or Bon-Ton brands. The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and liquidated, ending the lineage of stores that once operated under the Meis banner. The closure of Bon-Ton marked the end of a retail legacy that had spanned over 150 years.
