Semonkong
Semonkong is a town located in the Maseru District of Lesotho. It is known primarily for being situated near the Maletsunyane Falls, one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa. The town itself serves as a hub for tourism, offering accommodation, guides, and access to various activities related to the falls and the surrounding mountainous region.
Semonkong is relatively isolated, situated high in the Maloti Mountains. This isolation has contributed to its unique character and traditional way of life. The area is sparsely populated, with residents primarily engaged in subsistence farming and livestock herding.
The name "Semonkong" translates roughly to "place of smoke" or "place of steam," a reference to the mist created by the powerful Maletsunyane Falls.
Tourism is a significant part of Semonkong's economy, with visitors drawn to the dramatic landscape and opportunities for adventure activities such as pony trekking, abseiling, and hiking. The town offers a range of accommodation options, from basic guesthouses to more comfortable lodges.
Semonkong is accessible primarily by road, although the roads can be challenging, particularly during the rainy season. The town also has a small airstrip, but it is not regularly serviced.
