Porgy (play)

Porgy is a play written by Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward, first produced in 1927. It is a stage adaptation of DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy, published in 1925. The play tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar living in the Catfish Row tenement in Charleston, South Carolina, and his love for Bess, a woman struggling with addiction and her relationship with the violent Crown.

The play is a melodrama set within a specific time and place, offering a glimpse into the lives of the African American community living in poverty in the Southern United States during the early 20th century. Its themes include love, loss, addiction, violence, community, and hope.

Porgy served as the basis for the opera Porgy and Bess, composed by George Gershwin with libretto by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin, which premiered in 1935. While the opera is significantly more well-known and frequently performed, the original play Porgy remains an important work of American theatre, offering a different perspective on the same story. The play's dialogue reflects the dialect spoken by the characters, a point that has generated both praise for its authenticity and criticism for potentially perpetuating stereotypes.
