Amjad Ali Khan (Indian vocalist)
Amjad Ali Khan (born October 9, 1945) is an Indian classical sarod player, best known for his clear and fast taans, and for his contribution to popularizing the sarod. He was born into a family of musicians with a long and distinguished history in the world of Hindustani classical music. His family claims to have invented the sarod.
Khan was trained by his father, Haafiz Ali Khan, a renowned sarod maestro of the Bangash lineage. He gave his first solo performance at the age of six. Khan has performed internationally since the 1960s, playing at prestigious venues worldwide.
He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor. He has also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the UNESCO Award, and the Tansen Award.
Amjad Ali Khan is known for his collaborations with musicians from other genres, including Western classical music. He has composed several ragas and has written books on music and the sarod. His sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, are also accomplished sarod players, continuing the family's musical legacy. He is considered one of the leading figures in Hindustani classical music and a master of the sarod.
