Oliy Majlis

The Oliy Majlis (Uzbek: Oliy Majlis - Supreme Assembly) is the parliament of Uzbekistan. It replaced the Supreme Soviet in 1994 and is bicameral.

The Oliy Majlis consists of two chambers:

  • Senate (Yukori Majlis): The upper house, comprising 100 members. 84 Senators are elected from the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions (viloyats), and the city of Tashkent by secret ballot through joint sittings of deputies of the Jokargy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regional, district, and city councils. The remaining 16 Senators are appointed by the President of Uzbekistan.

  • Legislative Chamber (Qonunchilik Palatasi): The lower house, comprising 150 deputies. 135 deputies are elected from territorial electoral districts on the basis of representation from political parties. The remaining 15 seats are reserved for the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan (until 2020) to ensure representation of environmental interests. After 2020 these seats were abolished following the adoption of the new Ecological Code and the subsequent founding of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan.

The Oliy Majlis is responsible for enacting legislation, approving the state budget, and overseeing the activities of the executive branch. It also plays a role in foreign policy. Sessions are held in Tashkent.

The term of office for both chambers is five years.
