Muir Pass

Muir Pass is a high mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, United States. Situated at an elevation of 11,955 feet (3,644 meters), it is a prominent feature of the John Muir Trail (JMT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

The pass is named in honor of John Muir, the renowned naturalist and conservationist who explored and advocated for the preservation of the Sierra Nevada. It lies within Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park, marking a boundary between the two parks.

Muir Pass is known for its challenging terrain and exposed conditions. The approach to the pass from either direction involves traversing steep, rocky slopes, often above the tree line. Snow and ice are common even in summer months, requiring careful navigation and appropriate gear.

The iconic Muir Hut, also known as the John Muir Memorial Shelter, is located at the summit of the pass. Constructed in 1930, the stone hut provides a basic shelter for hikers, offering protection from the elements and a place to rest. The hut is unstaffed and maintained by the National Park Service.

Muir Pass represents a significant milestone for hikers undertaking the JMT and PCT, marking the highest point on the JMT south of Donohue Pass. It is a challenging but rewarding experience, offering spectacular views of the surrounding alpine landscape and a tangible connection to the legacy of John Muir.
