Gambart (crater)

Gambart is a lunar impact crater located in the central part of the Moon, near the eastern edge of Mare Nubium. It lies to the east of the straight ray that extends northward from the crater Tycho.

The crater is relatively shallow, with a somewhat irregular rim that has been heavily eroded by subsequent impacts. The interior is nearly featureless, lacking a central peak. Gambart's diameter is approximately 25 kilometers.

To the west of Gambart, a system of faint, swirling lunar swirls is located. These are believed to be areas where the lunar surface magnetic field is relatively strong, deflecting the solar wind and resulting in a different type of weathering compared to the surrounding terrain.

Gambart is named after Jean Félix Adolphe Gambart, a 19th-century French astronomer. A smaller crater, Gambart C, lies just to the southwest of Gambart. The surrounding mare surface is generally smooth and level, making it a popular location for potential lunar landing sites.
