1977 (band)
1977 was a short-lived British punk rock band formed in 1976 in London, England. The band is primarily known for featuring future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde on guitar and vocals before her formation of the Pretenders. The other members of the band were Steve Strange (vocals), who would later achieve fame with Visage, and future Generation X members Tony James (bass) and Mark Laff (drums).
1977 never released any official recordings during its existence, though some demos and live recordings have circulated. Their sound was raw and energetic, characteristic of the early punk scene. The band broke up in 1977 after a brief period of activity due to creative differences and the diverging career paths of its members. Despite their short lifespan, 1977 is notable for being a stepping stone in the careers of several prominent figures in the new wave and punk genres.
