Death and Nightingales (TV series)

Death and Nightingales is a historical drama television series based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Eugene McCabe. The series is set in County Fermanagh, Ireland, in 1885, and explores themes of love, betrayal, religion, and rebellion in the context of the complex social and political landscape of the time.

The story centers around Beth Winters, a young woman living under the control of her stepfather, Billy, a Protestant landowner. On her 23rd birthday, Beth plans to escape with Liam Ward, a charismatic Catholic man, hoping to leave behind a life of oppression and claim her inheritance. The three-part series unravels the events of that single day, exposing the dark secrets and bitter rivalries that plague the community.

Death and Nightingales was adapted for television by Allan Cubitt and directed by Jamie Dornan. The series stars Ann Skelly as Beth Winters, Jamie Dornan as Liam Ward, and Matthew Rhys as Billy Winters. It was produced by The Forge and Soho Moon Pictures for BBC Two and premiered in November 2018.
