Alfredo Rodríguez (pianist, born 1985)
Alfredo Rodríguez (born October 17, 1985, in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban jazz pianist. He is known for his virtuosic technique, improvisational skills, and blending of Cuban rhythms with contemporary jazz harmonies.
Rodríguez began his musical training at a young age, studying classical piano at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory and later at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana. His early influences included classical composers such as Bach and Chopin, as well as Cuban musicians like Chucho Valdés and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
In 2006, Rodríguez met Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jones was impressed by Rodríguez's talent and became his mentor and producer. This encounter led to Rodríguez relocating to the United States in 2009, where he began to develop his career as a jazz artist.
Rodríguez has released several albums as a leader, including "Sounds of Space" (2012), "The Invasion Parade" (2014), "Tocororo" (2016), and "Duets" (2019). His music often reflects his Cuban heritage, incorporating elements of son, mambo, and other Afro-Cuban musical traditions. He has toured extensively and performed at major jazz festivals around the world. He has collaborated with numerous renowned musicians, further solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary jazz.
His playing is characterized by its percussive attack, intricate melodic lines, and dynamic range. Rodríguez is considered an important voice in the ongoing evolution of Latin jazz.
