Winterstein (Saxon Switzerland)

Winterstein is a village in the municipality of Gohrisch, located in the Saxon Switzerland region of Saxony, Germany. It's primarily known for its prominent rock formations, particularly the Winterstein, also known as the Hinteres Raubschloss (Rear Robber's Castle), which is a notable climbing destination and offers panoramic views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The Winterstein rock formation features the ruins of a medieval castle. Historical records suggest that the castle was built in the 13th century and served various purposes, including a refuge for local populations and a base for robber knights. Over time, the castle fell into disrepair.

Today, the Winterstein is a popular hiking and climbing area. The ascent to the summit involves climbing iron ladders and stairs that have been installed to provide access. The views from the top include the Elbe valley and other surrounding rock formations, such as the Lilienstein and the Bastei.

The village of Winterstein itself provides access to various hiking trails that explore the surrounding landscape. The area is part of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, which aims to protect the unique geological formations and biodiversity of the region. Information and resources for visitors can be found in the nearby village of Gohrisch.
