Winterstein (Saxon Switzerland)

Winterstein is a village in the municipality of Gohrisch, located in the Saxon Switzerland region of Saxony, Germany. It's primarily known for its prominent rock formations, particularly the Winterstein, also known as the Hinteres Raubschloss (Rear Robber's Castle), which is a notable climbing destination and offers panoramic views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The Winterstein rock formation features the ruins of a medieval castle. Historical records suggest that the castle was built in the 13th century and served various purposes, including a refuge for local populations and a base for robber knights. Over time, the castle fell into disrepair.
