Robert Butts (bishop)

Robert Butts (1684 – 1748) was an English clergyman who served as Bishop of Bristol (1733–1738) and Bishop of Ely (1738–1748).

Butts was born in Suffolk. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA in 1706, MA in 1709, and DD in 1727.

He held several church positions before his episcopal appointments, including Preacher at St. James's, Westminster. He became chaplain to King George II.

Butts was consecrated Bishop of Bristol on 28 January 1733. In 1738, he was translated to the see of Ely. He held the latter position until his death in 1748.

While Bishop of Ely, Butts was involved in the administration of the Isle of Ely, an area then under the jurisdiction of the bishop. He resided at the Ely Palace, and oversaw ecclesiastical matters within his diocese.
