Austar
Austar was an Australian satellite pay television company. It provided subscription television services to regional and rural areas of Australia, operating independently of Foxtel, the dominant pay TV provider in metropolitan areas.
Austar offered a range of channels including news, sports, movies, general entertainment, and children's programming. It delivered its services primarily via satellite, catering to communities where terrestrial cable or other broadband infrastructure was limited.
The company's history involved several mergers and acquisitions. It was originally formed from a number of smaller regional operators. Over time, it expanded its footprint and service offerings.
In 2012, Foxtel acquired Austar. This acquisition significantly consolidated the Australian pay television market, bringing Austar's customer base and infrastructure under the Foxtel umbrella. Following the acquisition, the Austar brand was phased out, and its subscribers were migrated to the Foxtel platform. As of the current date, Austar no longer operates as an independent entity.
