Raḥamim (newspaper)
Raḥamim (רחמים) was a Hebrew-language newspaper published in Jerusalem in the late 19th century. It was one of the earliest Hebrew newspapers in Palestine and played a significant role in the development of Hebrew journalism in the region. Published intermittently between 1876 and 1878, the newspaper focused on local news, commentary on Jewish affairs, and articles of general interest. It often reflected the concerns and perspectives of the Sephardi Jewish community in Jerusalem. The editor of Raḥamim was generally understood to be Yoel Moshe Salomon, a prominent figure in the early Yishuv (Jewish settlement in Palestine). While its lifespan was relatively short, Raḥamim is considered an important historical source for understanding the social, political, and cultural landscape of Jerusalem during the Ottoman period and the early stages of modern Zionist activity. Its relatively small circulation and limited resources meant its impact, while noteworthy, was constrained.
