Tūranganui River (Wellington)

The Tūranganui River is a historically significant waterway that once flowed through the Wellington central business district in New Zealand's North Island. Over time, it has largely been covered and incorporated into the city's infrastructure.

Originally, the river flowed from the hills surrounding Wellington, through the area now occupied by Lambton Quay, and emptied into Wellington Harbour. Its course played a vital role in the early Māori settlement and European development of the area. It provided a source of fresh water, a transportation route, and a natural drainage system.

As Wellington grew, the river became increasingly polluted and prone to flooding. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, significant portions of the river were culverted – enclosed in underground pipes – to manage stormwater and create more usable land. The modern city has effectively built over much of its original course.

While not visible today, the Tūranganui River remains an important part of Wellington's history and identity. Efforts are made to acknowledge its former presence in urban planning and design, often through commemorative markers and artworks. It is also a focus in understanding the city's environmental history and the challenges of urban development. Its original course influences modern infrastructure and drainage patterns. The river also plays a significant part in the history of mana whenua iwi.
