William McIntyre (judge)

William McIntyre (1918-2009) was a Canadian jurist who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1979 to 1989.

Born in Lachine, Quebec, McIntyre received his legal education from the University of British Columbia. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1948. He practiced law privately for several years before being appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1973.

In 1979, Prime Minister Joe Clark appointed McIntyre to the Supreme Court of Canada. During his tenure, he participated in numerous landmark cases spanning diverse areas of law, including constitutional law, criminal law, and administrative law. His judgments were often characterized by a pragmatic and moderate approach.

Justice McIntyre retired from the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989. He remained active in legal circles after his retirement, serving as an arbitrator and consultant. He died in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2009.
