N4 road (Ireland)

The N4 is a national primary road in Ireland, running from Dublin to Collooney in County Sligo. It is one of the main arterial routes connecting the east and northwest of the country.

Route Description:

The N4 begins at the M50 motorway (Junction 7) on the western outskirts of Dublin. From there, it proceeds in a generally westward direction, passing through or near towns such as Lucan, Leixlip, Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield, Kinnegad, Mullingar, Longford, and Carrick-on-Shannon. The road continues northwestward to its terminus at Collooney, County Sligo, where it merges into the N17.

Road Status and Improvements:

Significant sections of the N4 have been upgraded to motorway standard. These sections are designated as the M4 motorway between Dublin and Kinnegad, and the M6 motorway connecting Kinnegad to Galway, diverting some traffic from the original N4 alignment. Sections of the original N4 remain as regional roads, typically designated as R roads. Ongoing road improvement projects continue to enhance safety and reduce travel times along the N4 corridor.
