2/1st Field Regiment (Australia)

The 2/1st Field Regiment was an artillery regiment of the Australian Army that served during World War II. It was initially raised as part of the 6th Division in 1939 and saw action in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo.

The regiment was formed at Ingleburn, New South Wales, and comprised two batteries of 18-pounder field guns and 4.5-inch howitzers. After training, the regiment deployed to the Middle East in early 1940. It participated in the North African campaign, including the battles of Bardia and Tobruk. Later, it served in the Greek campaign in 1941, where it was largely destroyed during the German invasion.

Rebuilt in Palestine, the 2/1st Field Regiment returned to Australia in 1942 in response to the threat posed by Japan. It subsequently fought in the New Guinea campaign, including the battles around Buna–Gona and later in the Aitape–Wewak campaign.

Following the end of the war, the 2/1st Field Regiment was disbanded in 1946. Its battle honours include Bardia, Capture of Tobruk, Greece 1941, South-West Pacific 1942–45, Buna–Gona, and Aitape–Wewak.
