Chamber of Deputies (Haiti)
The Chamber of Deputies (French: Chambre des Députés) is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Haiti. Along with the Senate, it forms the National Assembly. The Chamber is composed of 119 deputies, each representing one of Haiti's 119 electoral constituencies. Deputies are elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms.
The Chamber of Deputies is responsible for passing laws, approving the national budget, and overseeing the executive branch of government. It has significant power in shaping Haitian policy, particularly concerning matters of domestic policy and budgetary allocations. The Speaker of the Chamber presides over its sessions and plays a crucial role in legislative proceedings. The Chamber also has committees that scrutinize proposed legislation and conduct investigations.
Historically, the Chamber of Deputies has been a site of both political stability and instability. Periods of effective governance have been interspersed with times of political crisis, reflecting broader challenges in Haitian political life. The functioning and influence of the Chamber are often intertwined with the broader political climate and the strength of executive power. The selection and operation of the Chamber has been subject to various levels of scrutiny and criticism throughout Haitian history.
