The Railway Children (band)

The Railway Children were a British indie pop band, formed in Wigan, England, in 1984. The core members were Gary Newby (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Brian Bateman (guitar), Stephen Hull (bass), and Guy Keegan (drums).

The band is best known for their jangle-pop sound, reminiscent of The Smiths and The Stone Roses, and for their singles "Brighter," "Every Beat of the Heart," and "Something She Said." They signed to Factory Records in 1987 and released their debut album, Reunion, the same year. "Brighter" became an indie hit, and secured them a wider audience.

After leaving Factory Records, they signed with Virgin Records and released their second album, Recurrence, in 1988. This album contained "Every Beat of the Heart," which was their biggest commercial success, reaching the top 30 in the UK Singles Chart and charting in the United States.

The Railway Children released their third album, Native Place, in 1990. Despite critical acclaim, the album was not a commercial success. The band subsequently split up in the early 1990s.

In the 2000s, The Railway Children reformed and have played sporadic gigs and festivals. Gary Newby has also continued to perform as a solo artist. Their music has experienced a resurgence in popularity due to its inclusion in films and television shows and its rediscovery by new generations of indie music fans.
