Blue Jean (film)
Blue Jean is a 2022 British drama film written and directed by Georgia Oakley, in her feature directorial debut. The film stars Rosy McEwen as Jean, a closeted lesbian PE teacher in 1988 Newcastle, England, during the time of Section 28, a law prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality in schools.
The film follows Jean as she navigates the complexities of concealing her sexuality from her colleagues and students while maintaining a relationship with her girlfriend, Viv (Kerrie Hayes). When a new student, Lois (Lucy Halliday), arrives at Jean's school and seeks her out for support, Jean's carefully constructed world begins to unravel, forcing her to confront her own internalised homophobia and the potential consequences of being openly gay in a prejudiced society.
Blue Jean explores themes of self-acceptance, societal prejudice, the impact of oppressive legislation on LGBTQ+ individuals, and the difficult choices people make to protect themselves in hostile environments. The film was widely praised for its performances, particularly McEwen's, and its nuanced portrayal of the era. It premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, winning the Venice Film Lions Award.
