National Highway 20 (India)

National Highway 20 (NH 20) was a National Highway in India that has been renumbered and subsumed into other National Highways as part of a rationalization of the National Highway numbering system which took effect in 2010. Prior to the renumbering, NH 20 connected Bakhtiarpur in Bihar to Simdega in Jharkhand.

The former route of NH 20 largely overlaps with sections of the current NH 22 and NH 143. It passed through important towns and cities in Bihar and Jharkhand, facilitating transportation and connectivity within the region. The key areas it previously connected included Patna (via Bakhtiarpur), Jehanabad, Bodh Gaya, Chatra, and Simdega.

The renumbering was undertaken to create a more logical and systematic numbering system for the National Highway network across India. Highways running primarily in a north-south direction are generally assigned even numbers, while those running east-west are assigned odd numbers. This change aimed to simplify navigation and improve efficiency in route planning.

The original NH 20 served a significant role in regional transportation before its renumbering. While the designation no longer exists, the underlying road infrastructure continues to be a vital part of the Indian highway network, now carrying different numerical designations. Travelers familiar with the old NH 20 designation should now refer to the corresponding sections of NH 22 and NH 143.
