Once (film)
Once is a 2007 Irish romantic musical drama film written and directed by John Carney. The film stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová as two struggling musicians in Dublin, Ireland. Hansard and Irglová also composed and performed the original songs featured in the film.
Synopsis
The film follows a Dublin busker (Hansard), known only as "Guy," who repairs vacuum cleaners in his father's shop by day and plays his guitar on the streets at night. He meets a young Czech immigrant (Irglová), known only as "Girl," who sells flowers and cleans houses. They discover a shared passion for music and begin writing and rehearsing songs together. Their collaboration blossoms into a romantic connection, although both are burdened by past relationships. Guy is still heartbroken over his ex-girlfriend who moved to London, and Girl is married but separated with a child.
They decide to record a demo album with the help of a group of local musicians. The film chronicles their journey, the development of their music, and the complexities of their relationship. Ultimately, they must decide whether to pursue their musical ambitions and potential romantic future, or to remain committed to their existing lives.
Production
Once was filmed on a very low budget and primarily used hand-held cameras and natural lighting. The actors were not professional actors but rather working musicians, contributing to the film's realistic and intimate feel. Much of the dialogue was improvised.
