Air ram

An air ram, also known as an air cylinder, pneumatic cylinder, or pneumatic actuator, is a mechanical device that uses the power of compressed gas, typically air, to produce a force in a reciprocating linear motion. At its core, an air ram consists of a piston inside a cylindrical barrel. Compressed air is introduced into one or both ends of the cylinder, causing the piston to move along its axis. This movement can be used to push, pull, lift, press, or actuate various mechanisms.

Air rams are widely used in industrial automation, manufacturing processes, robotics, and many other applications where linear force and controlled movement are required. Their advantages include simplicity, reliability, relatively low cost, and the ability to provide high force over short distances. They are often preferred over hydraulic cylinders in applications where cleanliness is a concern, as air leaks are less problematic than hydraulic fluid leaks.

Different types of air rams exist, including single-acting cylinders (which use air pressure to move the piston in one direction and a spring to return it) and double-acting cylinders (which use air pressure to move the piston in both directions). Additionally, variations exist based on size, stroke length, mounting style, and other specific application requirements. Proper selection of an air ram depends on factors such as the required force, speed, stroke length, and environmental conditions.
