72nd Division (People's Republic of China)

The 72nd Division was a military formation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). It was part of the 24th Army.

Formed in February 1949, it was designated as the 72nd Division of the 24th Army. The division was composed of the former 214th Regiment of the 72nd Brigade of the 36th Column of Huadong Field Army, the 215th Regiment of the 72nd Brigade of the 36th Column of Huadong Field Army, and the 216th Regiment of the 72nd Brigade of the 36th Column of Huadong Field Army.

Under the command of the 24th Army, the division took part in various campaigns during the Chinese Civil War.

In 1960 the division was transferred to Beijing Military Region control, leaving 24th Army. In 1962 it was assigned to the 69th Army.

In January 1969, the division was disbanded. Its three regiments were detached and transferred to other units.
