Südangeln

Südangeln (South Angeln) is a geographical and cultural region located in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It forms the southern part of the Angeln peninsula, which lies between the Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei inlet.

Geographically, Südangeln is characterized by its rolling hills, fertile fields, and numerous small lakes and ponds, known as "Teiche." Agriculture is a significant part of the region's economy.

Historically, Südangeln shares a rich history with the rest of Angeln, being the ancestral homeland of the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes that migrated to Britain and gave England its name. However, while the term "Angeln" can sometimes refer to the entire peninsula, "Südangeln" specifically denotes the southern portion. The northern part of the peninsula is sometimes referred to as "Nordangeln" or simply included within "Angeln."

Administratively, Südangeln does not constitute a clearly defined or formally recognized entity. Its boundaries are generally understood geographically rather than politically. The area largely falls within the Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg administrative district.

Culturally, Südangeln retains some distinct traditions and customs. While closely linked to the broader Schleswig-Holstein region, local dialects and folklore reflect the area's unique heritage.
