Watlington railway station (Oxfordshire)

Watlington railway station was a former station located in Watlington, Oxfordshire, England. It served as the terminus of a short branch line from Princes Risborough.

History

The station opened on 15 June 1872, as part of the Watlington and Princes Risborough Railway. The line was operated by the Great Western Railway (GWR) from its opening, and absorbed by them in 1883.

Watlington station primarily served the local agricultural community and transported passengers to and from the town. The station building was constructed in a typical GWR style for branch line termini.

Closure

Passenger services were withdrawn on 1 January 1957. Freight traffic continued to operate on the line until 2 January 1961, at which point the station and the entire branch line were closed.

Present Day

The station building still exists, albeit in a much-altered state. It is now a private residence. The trackbed has largely been built over or returned to agricultural use, making tracing the former route difficult in places. No significant remains of the platforms or sidings are readily visible.
