Jeu de Paume (museum)

The Jeu de Paume is an arts centre in Paris, France, dedicated to exhibiting and promoting all forms of image (photography, cinema, video, and digital media) from the 20th and 21st centuries. It is located in the Tuileries Garden, near the Place de la Concorde.

The building was originally constructed in 1861 during the reign of Napoleon III as a real tennis (or jeu de paume) court, hence the name. It later served various purposes, including as a storage space and an exhibition hall.

From 1947 until 1986, the Jeu de Paume was the home of the Impressionist collection of the Musée du Louvre. This included masterpieces by artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Paul Cézanne. With the opening of the Musée d'Orsay in 1986, the Impressionist collection was moved, and the Jeu de Paume was closed for renovations.

After extensive renovations, the Jeu de Paume reopened in 2004 as a centre for modern and contemporary photography and media. It now hosts temporary exhibitions, film screenings, conferences, and educational programs, solidifying its position as a key institution for visual culture in France and internationally. The Jeu de Paume aims to explore the political and cultural contexts of the image, and to showcase the work of both established and emerging artists.
