The Scarlet Pimpernel (TV series)

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a British television historical drama series based on the novel of the same name by Baroness Orczy. It stars Richard E. Grant as Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English baronet who adopts a foppish persona to conceal his identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel, a hero who rescues aristocrats from the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution.

The series aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom and A&E in the United States, running for three seasons between 1999 and 2000. Each season comprised two or three two-hour episodes. The first season features Elizabeth McGovern as Marguerite Blakeney, Sir Percy's wife, who unknowingly aids in the Pimpernel's missions while battling her own past loyalties.

The plots generally involve Sir Percy, as the Scarlet Pimpernel, outwitting the French authorities, primarily the ruthless agent Chauvelin (played by Martin Shaw), in daring rescue operations. The series expands upon the original novel, developing the characters of Percy and Marguerite and exploring the political climate of the time in more detail. It maintains a focus on adventure, romance, and intrigue.

The music for the series was composed by Magnus Fiennes. Although critically divisive, the series gained a significant following for its engaging plots, strong performances, and depiction of the French Revolution. It received several award nominations.
