Mountaineer (Boston and Maine)

The Mountaineer was a named passenger train operated by the Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M). It ran primarily between Boston, Massachusetts and Montreal, Quebec, Canada, offering service through the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire. The train was introduced to capitalize on the region's tourism.

Service was inaugurated in the early to mid-20th century. The Mountaineer typically featured sleeping cars, dining cars, and coaches to accommodate both day and overnight travelers. Its route traversed challenging grades and offered panoramic views, making it a popular choice for leisure travel.

Over time, as with many passenger rail services in North America, the Mountaineer experienced a decline in ridership due to competition from automobiles and airlines. The exact date of discontinuation is subject to conflicting sources but occurred sometime in the latter half of the 20th century, prior to the Amtrak era of passenger rail service. Revival attempts have been proposed, but the service is not currently operational.
