1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (1898)

The 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (1898) was a volunteer regiment of the Wisconsin National Guard activated for service in the Spanish-American War. It was mustered into federal service on May 12, 1898, at Camp Harvey, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

During the war, the 1st Wisconsin did not see combat overseas. It remained stationed in the United States, primarily at Camp Chickamauga, Georgia, and later in other locations within the southern states. Its main role was training and preparation for potential deployment to Cuba or other theaters of operation, though it was never ultimately deployed outside of the continental United States.

The regiment suffered casualties primarily due to disease, a common occurrence for volunteer regiments during the Spanish-American War, particularly from illnesses such as typhoid fever and malaria.

The 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was mustered out of service on November 21, 1898, at Anniston, Alabama. Upon returning to Wisconsin, the men were discharged and returned to civilian life. The service of the 1st Wisconsin, though not involving combat, contributed to the overall mobilization and preparedness efforts during the Spanish-American War. Its experience highlighted the challenges of training and maintaining large numbers of volunteers in a time of rapid expansion of the military.
