221st Mixed Brigade (Spain)
The 221st Mixed Brigade was a unit of the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. Formed in June 1938, it was created as part of the reorganization of the Republican forces in the Levante region. Its initial commander was Militia Major Ricardo Gómez Rojo.
The brigade's composition primarily consisted of conscripts from the provinces of Murcia and Albacete. It was assigned to the 65th Division, which was part of the XXI Army Corps.
The 221st Mixed Brigade saw action in the final phases of the war, particularly in the Levante Front. It participated in defensive operations aimed at containing the Nationalist offensive along the Mediterranean coast. Specific details regarding its engagements and losses remain somewhat fragmented in historical records, though it's known that the brigade suffered casualties during the intense fighting.
Following the collapse of the Republican war effort in 1939, the 221st Mixed Brigade, along with the rest of the Republican army, was dissolved. Its members were either captured, went into hiding, or fled into exile. Its contribution to the Republican cause, while not as extensively documented as some other units, represents the broader mobilization of resources and manpower by the Republic in its struggle against the Nationalist forces.
