Sikkim (film)

Sikkim is a 1971 Indian documentary film directed by Satyajit Ray. Commissioned by the Chogyal (king) of Sikkim, it was intended to showcase the Himalayan kingdom's beauty and progress.

However, following Sikkim's annexation by India in 1975, the film was banned by the Indian government. The ban was primarily due to the film's portrayal of Sikkim as an independent nation with its own monarch, which contradicted the new political reality.

The film remained largely unseen for several decades. It was finally lifted in 2010, and has since been screened at film festivals and made available for public viewing. Sikkim is significant not only as a work by a renowned filmmaker but also as a historical document offering a glimpse into a pre-annexation Sikkim. Its controversial history further adds to its importance in understanding the complex political dynamics of the region.
