Kyllini, Elis
Kyllini (also spelled Kyllene, Greek: Κυλλήνη) is a coastal town and a former municipality in the Elis regional unit, Peloponnese, Greece. Situated on a peninsula jutting into the Ionian Sea, it is known for its beautiful beaches, therapeutic hot springs, and as the location of the medieval Chlemoutsi castle.
The town serves as a ferry port, connecting the Peloponnese with the Ionian Islands, particularly Zakynthos (Zante) and Kefalonia. Its strategic location has historically made it important for trade and defense.
The name "Kyllini" is often associated with Mount Kyllini (Mount Ziria), a prominent mountain in the northern Peloponnese, though the coastal town is located further southwest. The area boasts a rich history, with evidence of habitation dating back to ancient times. In antiquity, the promontory was referred to as Chelonatas. The current name, Kyllini, became associated with the area in later periods.
The municipality of Kyllini was merged into the municipality of Andravida-Kyllini in 2011, following the Kallikratis reform. Today, Kyllini remains a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, historical sites, and ferry connections.
