Tengra

Tengra, also known as Tangra, refers to a deity or group of deities in the traditional beliefs of various Turkic and Mongolic peoples, especially those predating the major world religions like Islam and Buddhism became dominant.

Tengra is often described as the supreme sky god, ruler of the heavens, and associated with concepts of power, creation, and fate. The term can also refer to the sky itself. The specifics of Tengra's attributes and how he is worshipped varied among different tribes and regions, but the underlying concept of a powerful sky deity remained consistent.

In some interpretations, Tengra is not a single, anthropomorphic god but rather a universal force or principle. Other interpretations depict Tengra with human-like qualities, capable of intervention in human affairs. The degree to which Tengra was perceived as actively involved in daily life also varied.

The worship of Tengra, known as Tengrism, involved rituals, sacrifices, and prayers directed towards the sky, mountains, and other natural features considered sacred. Shamans often played a central role in mediating between the people and Tengra.

While Tengrism has largely been superseded by other religions, remnants of its influence can still be found in the cultures and traditions of some Turkic and Mongolic groups. Interest in Tengrism has seen a revival in some regions as a form of cultural and national identity.
