As One (opera)
As One is a chamber opera in one act composed by Laura Kaminsky with a libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed. It tells the coming-of-age story of Hannah, a transgender woman, as she navigates the complexities of self-discovery, identity, and acceptance. The opera is scored for two singers – a baritone representing "Hannah Before" and a mezzo-soprano representing "Hannah After" – as well as a string quartet.
The opera follows Hannah from her youth, through her realization that she is female, and culminating in her journey of self-affirmation and eventual acceptance. It explores themes of isolation, vulnerability, and the search for belonging, as well as the resilience required to live authentically. The two singers portraying Hannah often interact and sing in unison, representing the internal dialogue and unity within Hannah's developing identity.
As One premiered in 2014 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and has since been widely performed and acclaimed for its poignant portrayal of a transgender narrative. Its accessibility, emotional depth, and intimate instrumentation have made it a popular and influential work in contemporary opera.
