Acronym

An acronym is a word or name formed from the initial components of a multi-word term, phrase, or name, usually individual letters (e.g., NASA from National Aeronautics and Space Administration) or sometimes syllables (e.g., Benelux from Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg). The initial components may be from any part of the word.

Acronyms are a subset of abbreviations. The defining characteristic of an acronym is that it is pronounced as a word, rather than as a series of individual letters. For example, "NATO" is pronounced as a single word, whereas "FBI" is pronounced as "eff bee eye."

A string of initials pronounced as individual letters is typically referred to as an initialism. There is often overlap and confusion between the terms "acronym" and "initialism," and some sources use them interchangeably. However, the key distinction remains the pronunciation as a word.

Well-known acronyms often become so ingrained in common usage that the original phrase is forgotten or becomes secondary knowledge. They can serve as shorthand, improving communication efficiency.

The use of acronyms is prevalent in many fields, including government, technology, business, and medicine. Their purpose is to simplify complex terminology and facilitate easier recall and discussion.
