Drapé (legend)
Drapé is a creature found in the folklore of the Lorraine region of France. It is often described as a malevolent spirit or demon that haunts bodies of water, particularly ponds, rivers, and wells.
The Drapé is said to lurk beneath the surface, waiting to ambush unsuspecting individuals who come too close. Its primary method of attack involves ensnaring victims with its long, flowing, and often sticky or slimy hair or beard. Once caught, the Drapé drags its prey underwater to drown them.
Accounts of the Drapé vary, but common characteristics include a fearsome appearance, often described as being old, hairy, and with webbed feet. Some stories portray it as having glowing eyes or a frightening voice that it uses to lure victims.
The purpose of Drapé legends likely served as a cautionary tale, warning people, especially children, to be careful around water sources and to avoid venturing too close to the edges, particularly at night or alone. The belief in the Drapé also served to explain accidental drownings and other misfortunes that occurred near bodies of water. Similar water spirits and monsters exist in the folklore of many other cultures, reflecting a common human fear of the unknown depths.
