Cheramyes

Cheramyes was a 6th-century BC Greek sculptor known primarily through historical accounts and a few fragmented inscriptions. His name is most notably associated with Herodotus' Histories, where he is mentioned in connection with the Lydian king Croesus.

According to Herodotus, Cheramyes dedicated a golden bowl to the Oracle of Delphi as a gift from Croesus. This bowl, along with other offerings from Croesus, was said to be of immense value. The historian does not offer details about Cheramyes' artistic style or other known works, limiting his fame to his role as Croesus' envoy or representative for this specific dedication.

Due to the scarcity of evidence, it is difficult to definitively attribute any extant sculptures to Cheramyes. Art historians rely largely on Herodotus' account and limited epigraphic evidence to understand his place in the broader context of Archaic Greek sculpture. His existence is therefore historically documented, even if details about his artistry remain largely unknown. Further archaeological discoveries might shed more light on Cheramyes and his potential body of work.
