Glavkino

Glavkino (Russian: Главкино) was the Main Committee for Cinematography (Главный комитет по кинематографии) of the Soviet Union. It was a central administrative body that exercised control over the Soviet film industry from 1938 to 1953. Glavkino oversaw film production, distribution, and exhibition, and played a significant role in shaping Soviet cinema according to the ideological and political directives of the Communist Party.

Glavkino was responsible for approving screenplays, allocating resources to film studios, and supervising the content of films to ensure they adhered to the principles of socialist realism. It also controlled the importation and distribution of foreign films in the Soviet Union. During its existence, Glavkino wielded considerable power over the artistic and economic aspects of Soviet filmmaking. Following the death of Joseph Stalin and subsequent political reforms, Glavkino was reorganized and its functions were redistributed among other state agencies.
