Anne Wentworth (prophetess)

Anne Wentworth (fl. 1650s) was an English prophetess and religious radical active during the Interregnum period. Details of her life are scarce, but she is primarily known for her pamphlet A Revelation of Jesus Christ, by His Spirit, unto His Handmaid Anne Wentworth, published in 1657.

Wentworth's Revelation is a complex and often obscure prophetic text, typical of the radical religious writing of the era. In it, she interprets current events through the lens of biblical prophecy, arguing for the imminent coming of Christ and the establishment of a new spiritual kingdom. Her work is characterized by its allegorical language, numerological symbolism, and apocalyptic themes.

Wentworth identified with other radical religious groups of the time, though she does not appear to have been formally affiliated with any particular sect. Her writing reflects the influence of Fifth Monarchist and Ranter ideologies, particularly in its emphasis on spiritual freedom and the overturning of earthly hierarchies. She believed in the power of individual revelation and challenged established religious authorities.

Her prophetic pronouncements often criticized the perceived hypocrisy and corruption of the political and religious leaders of her day, and she advocated for social justice and the equality of all believers. Wentworth's work, although not widely circulated, provides valuable insight into the religious ferment and radical thought that characterized England during the mid-17th century. Her pamphlet remains an important source for understanding the diverse and often unconventional expressions of religious belief during this period. Further research into her life and the reception of her work is ongoing.
