METTL1

METTL1, or Methyltransferase Like 1, is a protein encoded by the METTL1 gene in humans. It is a member of the methyltransferase superfamily, a group of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a methyl group from a methyl donor, typically S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), to an acceptor molecule.

The exact function of METTL1 is still under investigation, but it is believed to play a role in tRNA modification. Specifically, it is proposed to be involved in the methylation of tRNA, a crucial process for tRNA stability, folding, and accurate translation of mRNA into proteins. The methylation of tRNA by METTL1 contributes to the overall fidelity and efficiency of protein synthesis.

The METTL1 gene is located on chromosome 12 in humans. Studies have shown that METTL1 is expressed in various tissues, suggesting a broad role in cellular processes requiring tRNA modification. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the specific substrates and functional consequences of METTL1 activity in different cellular contexts. Dysregulation of METTL1 expression or activity may be linked to various diseases, but more investigations are required to establish definitive associations.
