Áo bà ba

The áo bà ba is a traditional Vietnamese garment. It is a simple, comfortable outfit typically worn by people in the rural areas of Southern Vietnam, particularly in the Mekong Delta region. Historically associated with the peasant class, the áo bà ba consists of a long-sleeved, button-down top (the áo) and loose-fitting trousers (the quần).

The top is characterized by its two prominent pockets near the lower front and its straight, un-darted cut. It is usually made of simple materials like cotton or silk, and traditionally came in darker colors like black, brown, or navy blue for everyday wear. White áo bà ba are often worn for funerals. The trousers are typically made of the same material and are wide-legged for ease of movement, especially during agricultural work.

While historically a utilitarian garment, the áo bà ba has evolved in modern times and can be seen in contemporary fashion. It is sometimes worn with more elaborate designs, embellishments, or in brighter colors for special occasions or performances. Despite modernization, it remains a significant cultural symbol of Southern Vietnam.
