Edward Harley (Parliamentarian)

Edward Harley (Parliamentarian) was a prominent English landowner and politician who served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was a member of the Harley family, a politically influential dynasty in Herefordshire and beyond.

Harley was born in 1664, the eldest son of Sir Edward Harley and Abigail Stephens. He inherited his father's estates and political influence. He was first elected to Parliament for the borough of Eye in 1690. He would later represent Leominster and Herefordshire at various points throughout his career.

Harley was generally aligned with the Tory party and often acted in concert with his more famous younger brother, Robert Harley, later Earl of Oxford and Mortimer. While Robert rose to become a key figure in government, Edward remained a more consistent and perhaps less ambitious presence within the Tory ranks. He was known for his attentiveness to local interests and his steadfast support for the Church of England.

His parliamentary career spanned a period of significant political upheaval, including the Glorious Revolution and the rise of party politics. He participated in debates on a wide range of issues, including the succession to the throne, the war with France, and matters of trade and finance. While he lacked the brilliance of his brother, Edward Harley was a respected and conscientious parliamentarian who made a significant contribution to public life.

He died in 1735, leaving behind a considerable estate and a legacy of service to his county and country. His papers and correspondence provide valuable insights into the political and social history of the period. He married Elizabeth Foley, daughter of Thomas Foley, and they had a number of children who continued the Harley family's involvement in politics and public service.
