The house is associated with the Chapman family, a prominent family in Charles County history. Gustavus Brown Chapman, a physician, lived at Locust Grove in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The property remained in the Chapman family for several generations.

Locust Grove is a significant example of Georgian architecture in Southern Maryland and represents a well-preserved example of a wealthy planter's home from the 18th century. The property includes the main house and several outbuildings, reflecting the self-sufficient nature of plantation life during that period.

Locust Grove was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
