Ovčjak
Ovčjak (also sometimes referred to as "Ovcar") is a generic term in Slavic languages, particularly South Slavic languages, denoting a sheepdog or shepherd dog. It is not a breed name in itself, but rather a descriptor indicating the dog's primary function. The term literally translates to "shepherd dog" or "sheep dog."
In different regions, the word "Ovčjak" may be associated with specific breeds or types of livestock guardian dogs. For example, in some areas of the Balkans, the term might be loosely applied to various large, white-coated dogs traditionally used to protect livestock from predators. However, it is important to note that these dogs may or may not be formally recognized breeds.
The precise meaning and application of the term "Ovčjak" can therefore vary depending on the geographic context and the specific breeds of sheepdogs common in a given area. It is essential to consider the local context when encountering this term to understand which specific type of dog is being referenced. It is frequently encountered as part of a dog's breed name, for example the Šarplaninac (formerly known as Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog – Šarplaninac).
